Hackers ‘will use SEO to climb up search rankings’
More and more hackers will begin using search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques in 2010 to climb up Google rankings and trap users, according to a recent report.
They are also using events of the day to give their bot-infested pages better appeal on search engines, theĀ study by Sunbelt Software found.
This was in reference to many hackers using the recent sudden death of actress Brittany Murphy to sharply increase the SEO of their sites.
Sam Tilston, director of marketing for Zoombits.co.uk, said: ‘The main [strategy] is hacking sites for links. This involves penetrating a website to embed links on it. The more authoritative or powerful a website is, the bigger a target it will be to hackers.
‘When optimising for contemporary references rather than broader issues it is important to remember Google universal search, which incorporates many sources into the Google search results page. Therefore, if you are doing SEO for a contemporary reference, it is vital to ensure your message is placed on Facebook and Twitter to ensure they are included in the Google real-time search.’
He added that many hackers do this, which has been seen in the steep rise in attacks on Facebook and Twitter pages that has occurred over the past year.
Sunbelt Software found that after the untimely death of Brittany Murphy, her name became one of the most dangerous searches on Google, owing to the amount of hackers who had used the event to raise their SEO.
